Ships Photo Archive of the
Shipping Company
W. Kunstmann in Stettin 1870 - 1939

During the extensive research of both Fritzen shipping company archives, Hans-Jürgen Hollstein and myself noticed that the name
„Wilhelm Kunstmann“ was very often used in correlation with the shipping company Fritzen. Affected by the political environment at this time,
the company W. Kunstmann ceased all activities although she was the biggest shipping company in Stettin
and one of the biggest shipping companies in the Baltic sea area in the 1930s.
For these reasons, Hans-Jürgen Hollstein and myself were in the opinion that this company deserves to be honored in one photo archive.
Valuable information was retrieved from the book „Deutsche Reedereien, Band 12“ from Gert Uwe Detlefsen.
"Die deutsche Kriegsmarine 1939 - 1945, Band 2" from Siegfried Breyer.
"Heimathafen Stettin - Die Geschichte des Stettiner Hafens, seiner Reedereien und seiner maschinengetriebenen Schiffe 1815 - 1945"
from Kurt Pittelkow and Reinhart Schmelzkopf
"Dreimastschoner und Dampfbarkassen - Die Hamburger Werft J.H.N Wichhorst"
from Ulrike Lange-Basman
For the final assembly of photos and technical details and information, I am very grateful to Hans-Jürgen Hollstein.

Short history of the shipping company W. Kunstmann 1870 - 1939
1.4.1870 foundation of a ship broker company in Swinemünde/Pommern by Wilhelm Kunstmann, born 1844.
First acquisition of brig „Adler“ and the schooner „Minna“.
In 1988 they purchased a bark “Victoria” (896 BRT), and in 1889 their first steam driven vessel “Clara Siegmann” (1,623 BRT).
Only steam vessels followed, all with their names ending “IA”.
In 1886, the company expanded and opened an office branch in Stettin, which developed more and more to become their main office.
Tug boats and barges were added. As of 1915 all vessels were carrying the family name “Kunstmann”.
The Kunstmann vessels were mainly engaged in the iron trade from Sweden, Lulea, Oxelösund and Gefle to Stettin, which was then transported by riverboats or trains to Schlesien and even up to Austria.
Their bigger vessels were also employed for the worldwide tramp trade.  Beside an extensive lighten and tug business the shipping company acquired in 1929 the “Mercur-Shipyard-GmbH” in Stettin.
After 1933, when the power of the National Socialists became exceedingly strong, this shipping company was facing extremely difficult times and the shipping company Kunstmann
decided to sell all their vessels and sub companies in 1936, probably under enormous pressure from the National Socialists regime. This decision was necessary in order to immigrate to the United Kingdom.
(The Jewish family Kunstmann had received confidential indications from the Berlin Government that selling the companies and the transfer of these revenues to foreign countries would deteriorate radically.)
Beside other competitors the shipping company Johannes Fritzen& Sohn has been awarded with the purchase contract in September 1936, after a common agreement of the purchase price reduction from
3 Million Reichsmark to 2.5 Mill. RM. This sum was to be transmitted in several installments to London.
Irony of fate: Both parties have been detained for apparent violation of currency control regulations. Jacobus Fritzen was only released after several weeks after its bail payment of 700.000 RM.
Werner Kunstmann jr, the son of Dr. Arthur Kunstmann who passed away 1940, was jailed for 4 months in a British prison for apparent collaboration with the Germans.
Remarks: October 2000 the University of Greifswald returned the academic and honor title back to Dr. h.c. Arthur Kunstmann, which was abstracted by the NS-Regime.

The world wide economic crisis during that occured in
the 20s to 30s did also effect the shipping company Kunstmann,
here you can see 4 vessels in the port of Stettin laid up.

The company could not effort any longer the luxury to
maintain a private yacht. The yacht "Gerda", previously
operating out of Stettin as a passenger shuttle
vessel "Dresel", has been sold 1935.
